The Art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Its Benefits

Unlike Master Ken’s 100 Ways to Attack The Groin, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is based around a grappling approach. Just like in wrestling, the goal in BJJ is to gain control of your opponent and improve position. However, unlike wrestling, BJJ allows for submissions like joint locks and chokes to end a fight fast.

In competition, points are awarded for controlling and advancing positions, but there is no pin result like wrestling tournaments.

Ever watch the UFC and see a fighter win by choking the opponent or making them tap? This is an example of a submission in action.

One of the most fascinating components of BJJ is that of the ground fight. This is where the art is very diverse. A fighter who is in control and on their back is actually in an offensive position.

Considered the “gentle art” because you are able to submit without causing permanent damage, Brazilian jiu-jitsu appeals to all ages, genders and fitness abilities. Practitioners learn how to use special techniques, leverage, and timing to submit (often much larger) opponents using as little strength and muscle as possible.

The benefits of BJJ are filled with growth and opportunity. Opportunity to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. You will lose weight, improve your strength, gain balance, increase flexibility, and there is no machine that can replicate the cardio aspect (you will build some serious stamina).

Outside of your personal growth is that of relationships. Your teammates become your family, and you build a high level of trust with them (after all, you are practicing bringing each other to the brink of unconsciousness- that takes trust). There is no bond like that of teammates.

Still others want to find a competitive team sport that will allow them to test their skills in a tournament setting. There are very few times in an adult life where you can voluntarily put yourself in front of someone you need to physically defeat in a controlled environment.
